Modular PET scanners and innovation in early diagnosis

Traditional PET scanners are large fixed installations, tuned for a range of protocols. Modularity—detectors and electronics in blocks that can be combined or reconfigured—changes the model: the same technology core adapted to different form factors (dedicated heads, hybrid geometries with other modalities, more agile research prototypes).
That flexibility matters when the goal is early diagnosis in diseases where the signal is faint and sensitivity and resolution must be tuned for a specific organ or clinical question. It is not just “more resolution” but system architecture that lets you iterate on hardware and software without rebuilding the entire gantry each time.
From a DeepTech / MedTech company perspective, modularity also ties to intellectual property and a product roadmap: patents protecting reconfigurable architectures, preclinical validation milestones, and a clear path toward trials and regulatory affairs. The CTO or technical lead must turn those decisions into a roadmap that investors, clinicians, and engineering teams can understand.
Radiation imaging for applications such as early Alzheimer’s is an example where science, engineering, and the business model must stay aligned: without credible technology there is no product; without a clear clinical use case there is no adoption. Next-generation PET systems aim to close that gap with better detectors, more capable DAQ, and product design built to scale.
